Position your business for the low carbon economy

Dr. David Vincent, head of International Programs at Carbon Trust and an actual P.h.D. carrying scientist, is visiting Australia hot on the heels of self proclaimed Nobel laurette Lord Monckton. Last Thursday 11th February, we heard his thoughts about climate skepticism and how small businesses could position themselves for the imminent low carbon economy.

Climate (and other) change

  • Climate (and other) change

Climate Change is happening, here and now.

WWF’s Climate Witness campaign (for whom we produced some conference and protest banners) has been demonstrating that the effects of climate change are happening here and now. The symptoms of climate change are not just something our kids will have to deal with, but something we are starting to deal with now.

The reality of climate change is now accepted by the majority of the electorate and of politicians in Australia. The questions we are now facing are the degree of urgency with which we must address it’s causes, and flowing from that, what is an appropriate response?

On Sunday 27th September, members from the Digital Eskimo team represented at the Randwick Ecoliving Fair, as part of our ongoing support for the live local project. The day was a great success, despite the gale force winds that continually threatened to blow the fixtures away!

Discuss the importance of creative thinking at ‘Eat Green Design’ on August 12

Three speakers will talk about their own experience in product and communication design, who and what inspires them, and the importance of creativity for GreenUps – the rapidly growing green social network they’ve helped organise in Sydney.”

  • Sparks fly on the dancefloor at July greenUps

This months greenUps on July 7 was a special kind of networking drinks hosted by the Australian Museum, coinciding with the interactive ‘Climate Change – our future, our choice’ exhibition.

The exhibition imagined two possible future pathways – the outcome of us choosing to ‘Do Nothing’ about climate change, and another future if we take action to ‘Do Something’.

This month’s greenUps was themed activism. We asked five ‘activists’ to hop on a milkcrate with microphone in hand to explain their ideas, all based on different ’shades of green’.

The Falconer was packed to the brim (what delicious food!) and there were many new faces from different sectors and with varying interests. Check out the new photos on Flickr!

The third Sydney greenUps was themed around film and the environment and was another full house.

Director Maryella Hatfield presented The Future Makers a documentary on Australian innovation in renewable energy, and Mark Forstmann showed a teaser of Monkey Puzzle a new Australian film set in Blue Mountains. Phil Stubbs showed Holland Tunnel by the Neistat Brothers, The Age of Stupid film trailer, and Energy Wasting Day a humorous satirical site.

You’re right, design won’t save the world

designwontsave.jpg

We couldn’t help but notice the above poster, which was provocatively posted at our local café, The Wall recently.

An anonymous individual had obviously become annoyed at the growing awareness in the design community of its wider responsibility in the world and the exciting discussions that are now taking place regarding the power of design to help mankind in its hour of need. We’ve responded to the poster with our own asking people to visit this blog and begin a conversation (we’re also interested in hosting a round-table discussion in our studio, btw – more on that later).
