Physics and urban funk collided last Thursday as the Eskimos opened up their Lab Research Facility for a night of Droppin’ Science.

Amidst disco lighting, bunsen burners and a Van der Graaf generator we partied with our colleagues and clients, snacking on amazing, locally produced food, sampling delicious organic beer and even learning about some great low-carbon gift ideas for Christmas.

The theme of the night was ‘Droppin Science’, which we chose out of respect to climatologists – those hard working, underpaid and inspiring heroes of climate change research who are working tirelessly to provide the vital information we need to save ourselves. It was therefore fitting to hear from Nicole Kuepper, a two-time Eureka award winning researcher from UNSW. Nicole is currently working on a process that will one day allow us to create solar cells using a pizza oven, nail polish, solvent and an office ink jet printer.  What this would mean is nothing short of a revolution in energy generation – especially in the developing world, where basic electricity is less of a commodity than it is here in Coal Country.

Being a night of celebration, we also took time to focus on some of the many highlights of 2009. We’ve worked on several really exciting projects this year, and are very proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with our progressive clients. 2010 will be an especially busy one for us, and we can’t wait to tackle it with gusto after the (well deserved!) holiday break.

Big ups to everyone who came and got their geek on, particularly the folks who were rocking some very creative costumes. In the swarming crowd of white lab coats and black rimmed glasses, we spotted a solar panel, a cloud and a ray of sunshine. Even Radioactive man made an unexpected appearance!

The night could not have been what it was without the hard work of the following people: Catherine (our extremely talented studio coordinator/party planner!), Claudia (who helped to transform the Igloo into a veritable mad scientist’s lair) and Ant (our very own in-house DJ, who’s tunes were the perfect soundtrack for the night).

From the team at Digital Eskimo, we hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas and we look forward to your company in the new year!
