Today is World Toilet Day (yes really!) and we thought what better day to announce our support fort Aaron Fuller’s Wipe it Out campaign. Aaron plans to phase out the use of virgin fibre toilet paper in Australia by 2014. It’s the bold vision which we fully endorse – so much so we created this wee animation pro bono for the launch.
It may seem hard to believe, but over 98 million trees around the world are cut down annually to make toilet paper, destroying vital ecosystems and endangering countless species. Furthermore, a number of extremely harsh chemicals are produced in the process. Toilet paper made from recycled material, on the other hand, has a lower negative impact on the environment. It requires far fewer natural resources to manufacture and produces 31,000 litres less water and 400kg less greenhouse gases per tonne than non-recycled paper.
It’s ridiculous to continue cutting down trees, which are so important, valuable and necessary to our very existence, when we can be reusing materials that we already have. At the end of the day, we’re just using it to wipe our bums. Recycled toilet paper does the same job and does it well.
A big thank you to Scott and Claudia from our design team who worked hard to create this fantastic video and to Bill McDonough who’s TED Talk we paraphrased.
More on World Toilet Day, November 19
World Toilet Day seeks to raise awareness for the 2.5 billion people without access to sanitation. Diseases resulting from this problem kill over 1.8 million people each year, mainly children. Events are taking place all around the world in recognition of this event, including the “Big Squat”, where thousands of participants will squat in a public place for one minute.
Get involved in World Toilet Day (its not too late!)
