Last week we mentioned we were taking our rubbish home with us. We decided half-way through the week that it would be far more enlightening for us to actually keep it (on or under our desks) and audit it at the end of the week.

Unfortunately the Eskimos are a reliable bunch, and many had already taken their rubbish home. But this week, we’re going to do things differently.

Duncan, our Sustainable Development Manager, sent this through to us all today:

The idea is to keep all the packaging and such you bring into the igloo on your desk through the course of your week. We’re doing this so that we all get an idea of the waste we create over the course of a week and get a picture of what it is composed of.

Anything that can be composted should be immediately and not kept with your other waste.

Recyclable items should also be kept in your bag - it will help us see the ratio of what goes to be recycled and what goes to landfill and even though stuff is recycled, it doesn’t mean it’s zero harm so we still need to audit it.

We’ll collect it all on the boardroom table (on a plastic sheet!) at the end of the week and count it up, photograph it, discuss where is all comes from and how it can be reduced, photograph it and then we can stick it all on the blog.

Then we can do it again in three months and see if our habits have changed.

So, there you have it. We’ll get the photos up (probably early next week) and go from there…
