The Indigenous Stock Exchange and the great Indigenous website swindle

It was a pleasure to hear Professor Peter Botsman and Rob Chewying share their insights and experiences at our most recent DE Talk.

Professor Peter Botsman, a groundbreaking academic, public policy leader, and a core member of the Indigenous Stock Exchange (ISX), introduced us to an urgent issue: companies that are selling utterly useless websites to Indigenous communities, misleading and scamming aspiring business people. He also, along with Rob Chewying, founder of Chewying’s Lawn and Horticulture, a for profit social business providing lawn and horticulture services in the Shoalhaven region, introduced us to the Indigenous Stock Exchange (ISX), a free market for listing Indigenous business ideas, products, investment opportunities and people.

September greenUps – For the Love of Bikes!

What a night was had! If you didn’t arrive by bike to the event, by the end of the night you were certainly making wild promises to drag your’s out of the garage.

The Alexandria Hotel was host to September greenUps, with hundreds of cycling enthusiasts turning up for a social drink.

There was a lot of bike talk, and also a lot of new connections made between unlikely contenders. This is what greenUps aims to facilitate and we’re pleased with the excited and open vibe participants keep on generating every month.

There was a collection of Sydney’s sexiest bikes on display, Tim Longhurst entertained and enthused us with his “town bike”, and the crew behind the Sydney Bicycle Film Festival screened some tempting highlights. Dave Gravina also announced Digital Eskimo’s free bike parking and repair station, located in the garage for all to use!

We thank the City of Sydney for their generosity and support for organising the free bike valet, special guest speakers, an information stall and the fantastic giveaway prize of a new bike. Thanks also to Nutcase for the funky bike helmet door prize!

Digital Eskimo will partner with UNSW’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and the College of Fine Arts (COFA) to create a web presence to provide potential students with information about the multidisciplinary media course offerings at UNSW.

The project, commissioned by the International Office, will provide local and global students with the information and inspiration they need to consider the various media degree programs offered by UNSW. We look forward to developing a design that showcases the high calibre of COFA, FASS, and it’s graduates.

The Pool’s Sherre Delys and Kate Gauld share their insights

It was a pleasure to hear Sherre DeLys and Kate Gauld from Pool share their insights and experiences at our most recent DE Talk.

Pool is emerging after a year of experimentation (it launched in August 2008) and its great to see that all kinds of possibilities are being explored and collaborative efforts are coming to fruition. Pool is allowing the creative community to connect and explore new ways of collaborating with each other and with the ABC.

Working within a less than ideal framework and with a limited budget, Sherre and Kate are leveraging ABC archives into the public domain, setting up projects with Radio National shows – 360, The Night Air, Sound Quality and Bush Telegraph, and cracking open ways to revitalise tired radio formats to find out what listeners would like to hear.

In the Pool you can use ABC archival commons material, engage in direct conversation with Radio National presenters and upload your original new material for others to enjoy and give feedback, amongst many other functions that are yet to be fully explored. POOL has engaged some unexpected parties to license their work as creative commons material – the Sydney Symphony Orchestra are planning to release some 30-second recordings to Creative Commons to drop into the Pool for all to use.

Kate and Sherre explained their current focus on education and research to forge partnerships with universities. This is important to assist universities incorporate curriculum material for the ‘social media producer’ role developing within digital media. They are looking at approaching the most active of Pool users to become site moderators might be picked from (for more on this topic read Digital Eskimo’s White Paper on the role of seeding in social design).

Pool and ACiD (Australasian Cooperative Research Centre for Interaction Design) are partnering in ongoing research into the impact of the creative commons license on traditional media, and helping people dive into the rich amount of material in the cultural commons. The site has formed a special community – it’s friendly and supportive, and the contribution of the user is not for the ABC’s taking – it’s about sharing rather than harvesting content. The discussion turned many times to what conditions might prove to be the tipping point where the Pool community takes hold and begins self-seeding.

Pool showed us what’s happening on the cutting edge of this user-generated project, and while raising uncertainties and debates that continue to brew – Digital Eskimo feels privileged to have been able to facilitate the discussion.

3-Councils Ecological Footprint Project

The 3-Council Ecological Footprint Project is a groundbreaking co-operative effort between Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra Councils assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.

Digital Eskimo have been commissioned to assist the 3 Councils to reduce the community-wide Ecological Footprint of the Eastern Suburbs area.

The project aims to educate these communities in sustainable practices to encourage widespread behaviour change. We will engage in research and develop the branding, digital strategy, design and implementation of the project. Environmental issues are both contextual and complex, and have the potential to overwhelm otherwise committed or interested members of the community.

We will investigate the use of technology to engage local residents with these issues, encourage them to learn, share their stories and ultimately change harmful habits and behaviours. The Project will involve best practice water management in Woollahra Council, an organic food recycling program in Randwick and Waverley Councils and a retro-fitted sustainability ‘demonstration house’.

Sparks fly on the dancefloor at July greenUps

This months greenUps on July 7 was a special kind of networking drinks hosted by the Australian Museum, coinciding with the interactive ‘Climate Change – our future, our choice’ exhibition.

The exhibition imagined two possible future pathways – the outcome of us choosing to ‘Do Nothing’ about climate change, and another future if we take action to ‘Do Something’.

The night was particularly fun as people chatted and engaged with the exhibit, sparking many climate related conversations and setting an excitable mood for the evening. The energy-generating dance floor from Holland was a particular hit and got a good workout from the greenUps crowd!

It was great to see new faces and connect with people who were completely new to greenUps and the feeling that we have steadily grown the community was palpable with over 200 people attending.

The next greenUps is Tuesday 4th August 6pm at The Local Taphouse.

Digital Eskimo to lay foundations for Architecture Diary

We are pleased to announce we will be collaborating with the NSW Architects Registration Board to design and develop the NSW Architecture Diary.

Digital Eskimo has been commissioned to create the online diary to promote events that focus on Architecture in NSW. Ultimately the project aims to encourage and facilitate discussion and debate about a range of architectural issues in the community.

Currently architecture events are promoted across a wide range of websites and are often targeted at other architects and aficionados of the craft. The website will allow anyone to promote an event, from the large number of associations and organisations that are involved in the architecture world to individuals showing off a new installation – making it the place to go for up to date architecture events information.

We’re looking forward to the opportunity of applying our Considered Design methodology to uncover solutions for the Architecture Diary that go beyond the obvious and functional, to create something inspiring and useful for the community.

This month’s greenUps was themed activism. We asked five ‘activists’ to hop on a milkcrate with microphone in hand to explain their ideas, all based on different ’shades of green’.

The Falconer was packed to the brim (what delicious food!) and there were many new faces from different sectors and with varying interests. Check out the new photos on Flickr!

Speakers included Gabrielle Kuiper and Shaun Condon from Investa who explained (and debated!) corporate ‘activism’ (tea green). Senior Policy Officer for CHOICE, Victoria Coleman spoke of consumer activism (moss green) in the context of the emissions trading scheme and green power.

Artist Deborah Kelly (fluoro green) told us about the Tank Man Tango global commemoration of the Tiananmen Square massacre to be held on June 4 2009. Amanda McKenzie (sea green) talked of mobilising young people to take action on climate change through the AYCC PowerShift event. Finally, Adam Wolfenden (myrtle green) explained his motivation for non-violent direct action with Friends of the Earth.

Top 100 Creative Catalyst award

We’re very happy to announce that Dave Gravina, our Principal and Creative Director, has been voted as one of Sydney’s Creative Catalysts, part of the Creative Sydney Festival which runs from May 27 to June 12.

The Top 100 Catalysts list focuses on people with original, creative ideas who are giving inspiration to others in their field.

Dave has been given the opportunity to speak on 8pm, Wednesday June 10 at the MCA for the Creative Catalyst Showcase – Changing Sydney about Digital Eskimo’s project live local, a new online community resource that enables users to share their experiments in living locally and sustainably.

The Raise The Bar campaign team was also recognised for their successes in changing Sydney’s bar culture and John Wardle spoke about the campaign at the Space Race event, 6pm May 28 at the MCA. Our client, friend and bird of a feather Kate Bezar has also made a catalystic appearance in the Top 100 with her magazine Dumbofeather, congratulations!
