Our Design Philosophy

de_approaches_1

Considered Design is our collaborative human-centred approach to design. Working closely with our clients and their communities we co-create designs that are appropriate, effective and adaptable to change.

Design solutions emerge through a thorough analysis of context, project objectives, and stakeholder needs. We focus on identifying key stakeholder goals and motivations while mapping the way in which they interact with various tools & technologies.

Through this process we uncover previously hidden opportunities to engage with your audience. We then work with you to prioritise your opportunities for development into real world prototypes, the best of which are refined into elegant and appropriate design solutions.

The Considered Design ethos is embodied through the following principles:

  • People are at the centre of our designs
  • Design with the community
  • Uncover hidden opportunities
  • Prototype/explore as many of these as possible
  • Foster creativity and always aim to delight.

Designing with the Community

Designing with stakeholders is an opportunity to build relationships as well as to engage in reflection and intervention. Our methods focus on designing projects and tools that emerge out of community needs, and include the community as central to their development.

Change comes through awareness and participation. Good design communicates even complex information in accessible ways, and lays pathways for change by engaging everyone it touches.

We work with our clients to engage people and communities thus building relationships and facilitating lasting change. Co-design activities create opportunities for participation that generate ideas and provide champions for change in the community.

Strategic Thinking

At the outset of a project we take a high level perspective working to uncover and understand the opportunities, and to map strategies for realising them. We focus on strategies for participation and engagement, central to empowering and supporting change in and by the community.

We use our design expertise to demystify complex issues of sustainability and social change, and facilitate participation and engagement around these issues.

Iterative Design

We allow design solutions to emerge through iterative methods. The best results come from not being afraid to make mistakes and our approach is to embrace ‘mistakes’ as learning by encouraging experimentation and minimising the cost of our methods.

In this way we foster an exploratory culture within our projects, prototyping ideas and testing them prior to committing to more elaborate designs or production work. This maximises experimentation and minimises risk, resulting in an outcome that is far more likely to succeed.
